How to Get Rid of Furniture Depressions in Carpet

remove carpet dents
The carpet in your home is a true investment meant to last 15, 20 or maybe even 25 years. As the years and decades pass, furniture gets rearranged and depressions are left in the carpet where bed frames, dressers, nightstands, chairs and other pieces once stood. You’re very familiar with the depressions that appear when you’re moving furniture, but you might not be familiar with how to get rid of these unsightly indentations almost instantly. Don’t keep waiting for your carpet to “fix itself” – try one of these techniques to make you and your home’s carpet depression-free:

  • Make it cold: Got ice cubes? Of course you do! Take some cubes and crush them in a plastic sandwich bag. Take the ice cube dust and sprinkle it into your indentations. Once the ice has melted, you’ll want to reshape your carpet with a firm brush or a water-safe vacuum cleaner.
  • Make it wet: While ice is proven to do the job more quickly than just plain old water, you can still use a simple spray bottle to do the job. Spray each indentation with water and let the water soak for 10 – 15 minutes before smoothing over with a water-safe vacuum cleaner. If the depression has been there for years, you may have to repeat this process 1 – 3 more times to completely rid your carpet of dents.
  • Make it hot: You’ve ironed your shirts and pants, but what about your carpet? Say goodbye to those deep depressions by taking a steam iron to your carpet. Turn on the iron and hold it over the affected area. Once the steam has dampened the carpet and penetrated the carpet nap, turn off the iron and then take a firm brush to the carpet to bring it back to life.
  • Make it move: Your indented carpet still contains the straight, fluffy fibers that it did before it became depressed, and now it’s your job to restore it to its rightful shape. Take a coin and hold it vertically, then rub the indented area back and forth (lightly so as not to damage the carpet) until the depression begins to rise and flatten out. It may take a few attempts, but this method is guaranteed to at least begin to bring your carpet back to life!

Keep in mind that these DIY techniques won’t necessarily restore your carpet to like-new condition, but will most certainly serve to smooth it out and get rid of those annoying indentations.
