Carpet Cleaning Tips & Tricks From the Experts

The carpet in your home is a big investment – it’s not something you replace each year, it is highly influential when it comes to making a first impression on guests and it adds a tremendous amount of comfort to your home. When kept bright and clean, your carpet is a true source of joy in your household.

Conversely, dirty, stained and stinky carpet is a point of shame for some homeowners, and many feel hopelessly stuck with the soiled fabrics on their floors. While your carpets may seem like they’re too far gone, there might still be hope for them once they go through our industrial steam cleaning treatment. Check out this video to see what we mean:

Complete restoration for most carpets is possible, but there is always a point of no return. To avoid ever getting to that point of no return, we suggest employing the following tips and tricks to upkeep your carpets in between deep cleanings from our company.

Time is of the essence!

When it comes to utilizing the methods described below, it is absolutely imperative that you get started on soaking up stains and spots as quickly as possible. As dyes and liquids dry into your carpet material, it will become more and more difficult to get them out without steam cleaning or hot water extraction.

Beware of filtration soiling

Have you ever noticed that the carpet beneath vents in your home, on the edges of your stairs and under your doors becomes discolored as time goes on? This is known as filtration soiling and is caused by the many airborne pollutants like dust and smog that flow from your air vents onto the carpet and through tight spaces around your home.

It is not that the carpet is defective, but rather that there are environmental pollutants present in the air from your heating and cooling vents as well as air from the outside. For prevention, consider enlisting air duct cleaning services and leaving your doors open as much as possible to minimize the air flow through the tight space under your door frame.

Try these homemade cleaning solutions

You don’t have to spend a fortune on cleaning products to keep your carpets clean. Instead, you can use these proven homemade cleaning solutions. Be sure to apply each to the right type of fiber and situation!

For Synthetic Carpet:

  • Solvent-based solution: Dip a white cloth into a small pool of oil solvent or nail polish remover. Blot gently onto the stain. Press more firmly as you go to get deeper into the carpet.
  • Detergent-based solution: Mix ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing detergent such as Dawn or Joy with one cup of water. Dip your white cloth into this solution and go about your carpet cleaning.
  • Vinegar-based solution: Attack the stain with a white cloth dipped in a mixture of one cup white vinegar and two cups water.

For Natural Fiber Carpet:

  • Vinegar-based solution: In a spray bottle, mix ¼ cup white vinegar and ¼ cup water. Spray directly onto the stain and then dab with a towel until the stain comes out.
  • Solvent-based solution: Same as solution listed above for synthetic carpets. Do not apply directly to carpet.
  • Detergent-based solution: Same solution as above, but you can apply directly onto the natural fiber carpet!
  • Ammonia-based solution: Fill a spray bottle with one tablespoon of clear ammonia and ½ a cup of water. Spray directly onto carpet and then dab with a towel.

Armed with this knowledge and these cleaning solutions, you should be able to sustain healthy carpet in your home in between deep cleanings, which we recommend you have done at least once every two years. For the best carpet cleaning services in Eastern PA and New Jersey, contact Induct Clean!
