  1. Inspector must be Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS),
  2. Inspector must be Certified Ventilation Inspector (CVI), or equivalent
  3. Inspector must understand the working knowledge of basic HVAC system design, fundamental HVAC engineering practices, current industry HVAC cleaning and restoration techniques, and applicable industry standards.
  4. Inspector must be trained to inspect for microbial contamination and have the relevant experience. An individual must be licensed (where applicable by law) to find out Conditions 1, 2 and 3.
  5. Inspector must be able to do risk assessment including impact of the inspection process on building, environment and occupants.
  6. Inspector must be able to understand the layout including floor and mechanical plan of the home or building for inspection.

Which components of HVAC systems are included in inspection?

As per IICRC Standard 5520, it has been recommended that minimum 10% of HVAC system components must be included in inspection and then all the components shall be inspected.

  1. Air Handling Unit including filters and air bypass, heating and cooling coils, condensate pans, condensate drain lines, humidification systems, acoustic insulation, fans and fan compartments, dampers, door gaskets, general unit integrity, fan coil units, evaporative coolers etc.
  2. Supply Duct Inspection including air ducts, controls, mixing/control boxes, reheat coils and other internal components.
  3. Return Duct Inspection including return air ducts, dampers, return plenums and grilles.
  4. Exhaust Air Duct including general exhaust, bathroom exhaust and heat recovery exhaust.
  5. Internal components including coils, dampers and fans
  6. Damaged components
